Q&A with the doctor
1. What conditions/joints do you treat via arthroscopic surgery?
I do mainly knee and shoulder arthroscopy. Conditions which may require arthroscopic knee surgery include meniscus tears, cartilage injuries, loose bodies, ligament injuries including ACL/PCL tears, and patellar dislocations. Conditions which may require shoulder arthroscopy include rotator cuff tears, impingement, labral/biceps tears, shoulder instability, and frozen shoulder
2. What do you believe are the main causes of a sports injury?
Most sports injuries are due to overuse, but some are due to acute traumatic injuries that occur during pivoting, twisting, falling or landing awkwardly.
3. Is surgery always necessary for an ACL injury?
Some ACL injuries can be treated nonoperatively with medications, brace and physical therapy. Patients who are very active and have persistent pain or instability are more likely to require surgery. It also depends on whether there are other associated injuries present, such as meniscus tears, cartilage injuries, or additional ligament injuries
